Zuni Culture Arts and Center Concept:

The Zuni rely on the sale of art work for income. 80% of the workforce is involved in making art. An important aspect of the creation of the work is that each piece contains a “part” of the artist themselves. For this reason, the Art and Culture Center should be a point of “transference” for the artists to properly conduct the transaction. The rectilinear mass that fronts the street contains the public/business portion of the program. The angled legs of the plan house the artistic/private portion of the program. The artistic/private volume pushes through the public/business volume to create a gateway to the “point of transference”, as well as opens to the south for a view to the sacred mesa of Dowa Yalanne. The volume where creative meets business houses the visitor center and galleries. This physical gateway is also the educational gateway to prepare the visitor for the transaction and transference of the Zuni art. This project is phased to align with available funding.
